Reading: Romans 15:1-7
“Do not stare at me because I am dark, because I am darkened by the sun” (SS 1:6)
We also can be so rude to people and make them sad. Our stare, words or actions can hurt people deeply. We must make the world a happy place for people to live in. How do we make them sad?
Our negative comments about one’s appearance can depress them. We may even pass a joking comment on their size or complexion. They may also laugh but be sure they are hurt. Instead of lovingly correcting a flaw in their work we may rudely comment on them. We may even stare at differently abled people making them feel awkward. People have enough hurts of their own. Try to be a little more kinder than necessary.
Do not pour out all your woes to another unless she is your bosom friend. They may not be interested in detail. Neither boast about yourself comparing them unfavourably with you. It irks anyone. The Shulamite was hurt, no doubt.
D o not snub. Peopl e wi l l hesi ta te to ta l k to you. Your conversation should be full of grace like that of Jesus. Especially if the said person is living too close, hurts are unavoidable. But each time you hurt, apologise and try not to repeat it. Do not hesitate to apologise if you hurt again. Did not Jesus teach us to apologise seven times in a day? (Lk 17:4)
Sometimes a fist seems to strike your stomach while talking to others. Immediately make a decision not to do it to others. It may be a criticism, condemnation, jibe or a crude joke about us. If it hurts us it’s got to hurt the other person too. Learning what not to say is probably more important than learning what to say. The wise speak less.
Betrayal is probably the worst of hurts; especially to be betrayed by a kiss. People trust you and divulge personal information. They may also add not to share it with anyone. But in a moment of enthusiasm you may share it with another or to your prayer partner. It is wise not to share it with even your family. If it reaches your friend’s ear, your friendship may break.
Keep friendships healthy and thriving.
