“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Prov 31:30)
Beauty contests hit the headlines, giving us a wrong idea that to be a prepossessive personality means to be slim, fair with a load of cosmetics on you. Can a dark, fat and plain person be attractive? Oh yes of course. Let’s see how.
Beauty does have a place in being attractive, though it is not all. God created woman and said, “It is good.” So we need to look good. Many girls and women neglect their physical appearance. Often married women tend to neglect their looks after the birth of children. They put on weight and look matronly. Regular exercise will tone up your body and bring down your weight with proper dieting. Take care to groom yourself in the morning. Have a good hair-do. Let not your face be oily. Keep flowers if you can.
Don’t just put on “some” salwar and “some” duppatta. Select the matching blouse for your sari and pin-up smartly. Never be sloppy. Oil your feet so they don’t appear dry. Look at yourself in the mirror and satisfy yourself. Have simple jewellery. Let modesty and decency be your policy. According to Paul, women should not have a “look-at-me” appearance. If at all somebody’s attraction is drawn to her, let it be because of her good acts (1 Tim 2:9,10).
So, pay attention to what you do, that is, your behaviour. Always wear a smile, Be gentle and kind. Do not hesitate to put your hands on a woman and cheer her up. Let kindness be your second nature. Have a pleasant disposition. Talking about yourself all the time and snubbing others and a critical attitude will drive people away from you. “When I get ready to talk to people, I spend two-thirds of the time thinking about what they want to hear and one-third thinking about what I want to say,” said Abraham Lincoln. That’s a good principle to follow. A loud, proud woman loaded with jewellery and wrapped up in a costly dress looks grand but not magnetic.
What is most important is godliness. It is the fear of God, as is said in Proverbs 31:30, that keeps you off all bad behaviour and encourages you to develop a good nature like Dorcas that will woo people to you.
