“Who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us;
in whom we trust that He will still deliver us ...” (1 Cor 1:10)
As Abraham was about to enter Egypt, he called his wife Sarah and said, “I know what a beautiful woman you are. When the Egyptians see you they will say, ‘This is his wife,’ then they will kill me but will let you live. Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you” (Gen 12:11-13). Abraham had not even entered Egypt, but assumed a lot, probably correctly. He was afraid of his life and wanted to be treated well. He was treated well as he desired but at what cost? Sarah being an obedient wife shook her head this way and that in compliance. Her conscience pricked but she applied balm over the prick saying, “It’s o.k. It’s not a lie. After all I am his half sister.” But God did not look at it that way.
If Sarah had said, “No, let’s not lie and displease God. We will speak the truth and trust God to take care of us,” both of them would have been spared an ordeal. When inflicted with serious diseases, Pharaoh immediately realized where the fault lay and returned Sarah to Abraham. If they had spoken the truth, would not the same great God have performed the miracle and saved them from the situation? When David was about to be caught by Saul, the latter had to withdraw and go, because the Philistines were invading Israel (1 Sam 23:26-29).
Women and girls often face such straits in their life. Remember what the apostles told the Sanhedrin: “We must obey God rather than human beings” (Acts 5:29). Allow God to sit in the driver’s seat of your life. Whenever you are caught between the devil and the deep sea you will hear a voice from behind saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left (Isa 30:21). Be it parents or husband or well- meaning women, if you are old enough, you must boldly obey God and trust Him to stand with you. You can escape many calamities of life if you have the boldness to trust God and obey Him.
Trust and obey,
For there’s no other way; To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey
