“Whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother” (Mt 12:50)
Jesus grew up with sisters. One day His mother Mary and brothers came to see Him. His sisters did not come. Yet when He made the above statement, He did not omit sisters. He knew what it meant to have sisters and also knew how His sisters valued His relationship at home.
When I did my first year in college, the elder brother of my friend would come to take her home during strike days and lead both of us carefully amidst the crowd of menacing unruly people. I used to long for an elder brother like that.
We do have an elder brother. But to claim that relationship we need to fulfil one condition. We must do the will of God the Father. Jesus Himself did the will of the Father and it goes without saying, that to be His sister we also need to do the same. Then only we can belong to His family (Heb 10:7).
Many think it is difficult to know the will of God. It is not. It is r ev ea l ed in the Boo k tha t He has g i ven us. If we r ead i t systematically with an open heart we will know God’s will. Many find this exercise difficult because they are still steeped in the world. They must be transformed like the worm becoming a butterfly and with a renewed mind and commitment to obey what they read therein (Jn 7:17). Then and only then we will be able to test and approve the good, acceptable and perfect will of God (Rom 12:2).
Obedience to the will of God may seem hard. But if you understand that it is (1) Good for you, (2) Pleasing and acceptable when obeyed and (3) Absolutely perfect, it becomes easy. If you commit yourself to understand the will of God by reading His Word carefully and putting it to practice, you will become His sister.
This is a long-term process. We make mistakes and learn and grow. More than you wanting to become the sister of Jesus, He wants you to become His sister. So commit yourself to do His will and His will only. Remember, the cost of not doing His will is more than the cost of doing His will!
