“Perfume and incence bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice” (Prov 27:9)
“Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home” (Lk 1:56). Mary found a spiritual friend in Elizabeth her kinswoman. After the visit of the angel, Mary hurried to Zechariah and Elizabeth’s home. She was in a hurry to share the news with her cousin because of the spiritual affinity she had developed over the years.
An old lady is greeting a virgin as a mother. She was not shocked that a teenager, pregnant out of wedlock, had come. She did not ask her, “How did it happen?” or “Are you sure?” It was a prophetic revelation to Elizabeth. Mary couldn’t keep the secret to herself. She needed a spiritual friend and counsellor. Both their spirits flowed together. Mary found such a comfort and encouragement in Elizabeth that she stayed there for nearly three months.
May be Mary stayed back to help Elizabeth during her delivery and witnessed her deaf and dumb uncle speak once again. When she returned home she was three months pregnant. Elizabeth was a lady of unusual piety, faith and spiritual gifts, whose witness to Mary must have been an incomparable encouragement. All confusions and questions cleared from mind, Mary proceeded home to face whatever future held for her, with courage and determination.
Women go through lots of trials and temptations in life. We all need at least one spiritual friend who can encourage us in times of crisis, confusion and darkness. Many women walk a lonely path, weeping in their hearts with not a soul to share their burden with and receive counsel. Find a trustworthy, senior, spiritually mature lady with whom you can meet at least once a week to pray and share. This will ease your tension and help you see through your confusion. You will receive clarity on hazy areas of your life and comfort in your crisis.
Do not contemplate suicide when things go beyond your strength. Take courage to go and pour out your heart to your friend. Christianity is not a loner’s religion. We need fellowship. Two are better than one.
