“A quick-tempered person does foolish things” (Prov 14:17)
“When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, ‘Give me children or I’ll die!’ Jacob became angry with her and said, “Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?” (Gen
30:1,2). Such fireworks are common in life not only between husband and wife but also between parents and children, friends, neighbours and nowadays between students and teachers too.
Often we look to man for what God alone can do. Rachel went to the point of contemplating suicide. “Better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and angry woman” (Prov
21:19). The response to anger is often anger and hence the battle continues.
Let’s look at the way Isaac and Rebekah handled the same issue: “Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The Lord answered his prayer ... she went to enquire of the Lord” (Gen 25:21,22). Both of them had learnt to turn to God for their problems.
Anger is crude behaviour. It can lead to hurts, suicide, violence or even murder. We must learn to express our anger the proper way. First, we should stop talking when we are upset. We must cool down and think and give time for our emotions to settle down. Speaking emotionally leads to wrong choice of words which will hurt people and come back to haunt us. If silence is golden, it is at this time. Take time to choose gentler words which will express your hurt and which will not provoke the other person. He must understand why you are upset. If you can express it in a cool way without irking him and may be suggesting or asking for a solution, your anger will achieve results. Rachel could have said, “I feel sad that I am not able to bear children. Will you please pray for me?” God would have answered their prayer in a nice way.
Anger is just one letter short of danger and can blow up your life as in the case of Cain (Gen 4). You are even risking your eternal life by leaving it unattended. The earlier you take hold of the reins of your fits of rage the better. Decide now, before it becomes a habit and takes hold of the reins of your life!
