“You shall not hate your sister in your heart. Rebuke your neighbour frankly so that you will not share in his guilt” (Lev 19:17)
“His wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, ‘Let a gallows be made, fifty cubits high, and in the morning suggest to the king that Mordecai be hanged on it; then go merrily with the king to the banquet” (Esth 5:14). Haman’s wife Zeresh guided her husband to kill Mordecai. But when Haman returned home mortified, hiding his face, do you know what she said? “If Mordecai before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not prevail against him but will surely fall before him” (6:13). This was no new revelation to her. She was fully aware of it even before she misguided Haman. Then why did she dig the pit for her husband?
Zeresh knew her husband didn’t like anyone speaking against his wishes. He liked people to run with him. She knew he hated counsel and her words would fall on deaf ears. So she spoke words that would please him and the inevitable happened.
God has kept us as guideposts to people who flounder along life’s journey. Wisdom calls the simple and says, “Forsake foolishness and live and go in the way of understanding” (Prov
9:6). We are to teach people the right way whether they like it or not. Be it husband or our children or neighbours or friends or family, we must speak responsible words boldly.
Pray for wisdom every day. We may meet someone who doesn’t know which way to turn. Point them in the right direction. Have their future in view. Think good for them. They may hate you for your spiritual language. But by and by they will understand that you can be trusted and that you meant good for them. It is the foolish woman who misguides (Prov 9:13-18).
“Let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins” (Js
5:20). Our responsibility is great towards others. God trusts us to save souls from death. So be alert with the right counsel. It will be an apple of gold!
