“As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout,
so is a lovely woman who lacks discretion” (Prov 11:22)
I can think of only one woman who fits the above description and that is Job’s wife. I believe she was beautiful because her daughters were beautiful. And why do I say she lacked discretion? Because her husband said, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God and not trouble?” (Job 2:10).
When Job was in a desperate condition she said, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die” (2:9). If perchance Job had followed her suggestion, what would have happened? She would have become a widow and pulled down her home with her own hands. Many women are doing just that and their men are struggling to hold up their homes. Wise women like Abigail and the woman of Proverbs 31 built their homes. The unwise tongue is poison. The unwise woman is known by her loud chatter. She is dull-headed and misleads others (Prov 9:13-15).
Women are admonished to be sober and discreet (Tit 2:4,5). It means to be sensible and showing good judgment. A woman must be able to discern what to speak and what not to speak. People may like you for your beauty; but they will lose their respect for you if you speak foolishly.
Pray daily for wisdom and train yourself to speak less. Do not go to the other extreme of keeping your mouth shut. Laughing, joking and merrymaking are part of life. If you speak unwisely and feel sorry for it, then learn a lesson on wisdom. If we are over- careful we may even fail to speak the wise words God puts in our heart. Jesus grew in wisdom (Lk 2:52). So wisdom is a growth process. Daily pray for wisdom, correct yourself and be encouraged to move forward in the growth of wisdom.
We need to really pray that God would enable us to speak the right words at the right time. Filling yourself with the Word of God really helps because it is a discerner of thoughts and intents (Heb 4:12). If we practise the art of speaking wisely, we will no more be in the pig’s snout but in the King’s crown!
