“One sows and another reaps” (Jn 4:37)
Jesus could reap a bumper harvest in the Samaritan town of Sychar. How was it possible? Somebody had sowed there. The Samaritan woman knew Jacob and knew she was a descendant of him (Jn 4:12). She knew about worship and that she must worship (v20). She recognised Jesus as a prophet and had knowledge of the first coming of Jesus and that when He came He would explain everything to them. She saw the semblance of the Messiah in Jesus (vv25,29).
May be her parents taught her when she was a child. May be she heard these preached in the Samaritan Synagogue. May be someone who was burdened by her sinful living taught her. Whoever it might be who sowed the seed must have thought, “My efforts were fruitless. I wasted my time over this woman.” Oh, no. God sent someone to reap the harvest. The seeds were growing within her. Then came a man and led her to eternal life and revealed the Messiah to her. How the sower would have rejoiced that day! The sower had done “hard work,” said Jesus (vv34-38).
Note the sequence: Jesus revealed Himself and she became an evangelist. Many Samaritans came out of the town and believed i n Him bec ause o f her testi mo ny ( vv 3 0, 3 9) . They bec ame evangelists and invited Him to stay with them and many more became believers (vv40,41). Later on when Philip went to Samaria a revival broke out (Acts 8).
Never be tired of sowing. Don’t judge people. Keep on sharing to children, adults and old, men and women, nominal Christians and non-Christians, good and bad, educated and unlettered. Whoever is willing to listen, let them hear. To whoever is willing to read give a tract or Gospel portion or the New Testament. Sow in the morning and sow in the evening. Use every opportunity. Don’t be waiting for better opportunities (Eccl 11). Start today.
James’ advice for sowers is apt: “Be patient” (Js 5:7,8). Sowing is a time of weeping and harvest is a time of rejoicing (Psa 126:6). So keep sowing without looking at the wind or clouds (Eccl 11:4).
