Losing Words
Reading: John 9:1-34
The Lord is my Helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Heb 13:6)
“How he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know” (Jn 9:21). The parents of the blind man whose eyes Jesus opened blatantly lied to the Pharisees who investigated his case. What a great miracle the Lord had done in their family! Should they not run up and down shouting the good news to all? “His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue” (vv22,23).
What a wonderful opportunity the mother of the born-blind man lost! What shock she would have experienced on seeing her blind baby! What a struggle she would have had in bringing up a blind baby to adulthood! How she would have wept when she first sent her little boy to beg (v8)! What joy surged through her a few moments ago when her son came with perfect vision! How she would have praised God for this miracle! But when the Pharsees came, all her courage and joy melted down like wax. If she had boldly testified some Pharisees might have believed. She lost a wonderful opportunity.
Fear is the enemy of evangelism. It is natural. But we must overcome it. Jesus asked us not to fear people who can just kill our bodies but to fear only God who can kill body and soul in hell (Mt 10:28). Following that He said, “So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (v31). Overcome your fear and start talking about Christ. You may make blunders or find yourselves unable to answer the questions people ask. Don’t worry; keep talking to whoever you can. Occasionally some person may get angry with you. Let not that put you off. You will receive encouragements also. Leave the results in God’s hand. Keep preaching the Good News. You are the one little sparrow under the Father’s care (Mt 10:29).
Here’s what the Lord told Apostle Paul in a difficult situatiion: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city” (Acts 18:10).
