Living Water
Reading: John 4:1-26
“If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him
and He would have given you living water” (Jn 4:10)
The words, “living water” appears in two places only: here and John 7:38. Here Jesus is offering the living water to the Samaritan woman. In John 7:38 Jesus speaks about the rivers of living water that will flow from within the one who believes in Him.
The Samaritan woman was like Nicodemus, thirsty and wanted to know more about the living water that she might have it and never thirst again (Jn 3:5).
“Jesus stood up and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them. By this He meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified” (Jn 7:37-39).
The Samaritan woman was thirsty. She came to Him and drank. She instantly believed in Jesus. Rivers of living water started flowing from within her, leading her and others to eternal life. So I believe, when Philip went to Samaria, this woman heard how Jesus rose again from the dead and was glorified. I believe she was baptized by Philip and received the Holy Spirit when Peter and John prayed for her (Acts 8). I believe she was caught up in the great revival of Samaria and became a powerful disciple.
Many are going after the earthly water. “Our forefathers drank this, so we will also drink this. My parents slogged to save wealth, so I will also do the same.” That’s why they are always thirsty. They keep filling their pots that will go dry soon. Will you today decide to leave your pot and decide to go after souls? She left the pot that she may walk faster and bring the people quick before Christ finished His meal and left the place.
The Samaritan woman was not shy to talk to people. People knew her as a wayward woman. They had not seen her changed life. How would they listen to her? Such thoughts did not put her off. Don’t give in to the devil’s discouragement. Through simple sharing she set in motion the chain of events that would result in the salvation of many. Go!
