Trapped!
Reading: Genesis 29:31-30:20
“When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, He enabled her to conceive” (Gen 29:31a)
Leah was dumped on Jacob. Her emotion of disappointment can be seen in her expressions: “my misery” (29:32), “I am not loved” (29:33), “At last my husband will become attached to me” (29:34), “You took away my husband” (30:15), “I have hired you” (30:16), “This time my husband will treat me with honour” (30:20). It is very clear that Leah was unloved and despised. She craved for her husband’s love which was far from her. Who knows how many times she wished she hadn’t married at all and how many times she considered divorce. Trapped in an unhappy marriage, she turned to the Lord for consolation. “This time I will praise the Lord,” she said, when Judah was born. “God has rewarded me,” and “God has presented me with a precious gift,” were her other expressions that tell us that she had learnt to lean on God.
If life is hard for you, hold on to God with both hands. An unhappy marriage does not mean God cannot accomplish His purposes through you. It also does not mean you must separate. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Leah outlived Rachel and it was she, the unloved wife and not Rachel the lovely beloved who became the foremother of Jesus. Understand what God wants you to accomplish in your life. It may just be to bring up the children in God’s ways. He may also open avenues for you to be a witness. Abandon yourself in God’s hand and submit to His will. Be assured that you are not wasting your life. Live your life as best as you can.
A woman may feel emotionally cut off from her husband. She scratches and claws to get her mind across but discovers that they are on different planes. In such dark days Leah learnt that suffering need not destroy. She learned to turn deep loneliness into fruitful solitude. She turned water into wine. The best thing that she did was to count her blessings. She found happiness in the company of her children. She rejoiced in whatever small pleasures came her way.
Sometimes the best comes after the worst. You must live to see it and rejoice. God has not created you without a purpose. Do not disappoint Him. Let His heart rejoice to see you fulfilling that purpose.
