Power of a Mother
Reading: Genesis 21:10-21
“Rebekah became his wife, and he loved her;
and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death” (Gen 24:67b)
This verse is a window to the relationship Isaac had with his mother. Sarah was a comfort to him. Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah (Gen 25:20) and was without his mother for three years now. Yet he was not comforted. He missed his mother a lot and probably that was one reason Abraham started looking for a companion for him.
Children run to the mother for comfort. The comfort-giving instinct of a mother is gradually waning away in this era as too many things compete for her attention. She gives the comforting job to another and children are too smart to detect that it is only a sham comfort. Nothing equals the comfort a mother gives to the child. A mother’s comfort is not compared to God’s comfort; rather, it is the other way about: “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you,” says God! (Isa 66:13). There is nothing like a mother’s comfort in this world. That’s the power of a mother. Even after a child becomes an adult, she will remember the comfort she received from the mother.
A child grows up with lots of hurts. Friends and relatives remark that she is not as fair as her mother. School bullies target him and teachers turn a blind eye to it. Sometimes even the father may be cruel to the child. When he becomes a teen, he may face a failed affair. As an adult, his career dreams may turn sour. At every stage of life the mother must be a comfort to her child.
These days children face too many pressures at home, school and the outside world. If a mother’s mind is preoccupied with her job or cooking or anything else, the child will not come to her. They can easily read their mother’s face. So mothers, be relaxed at home. Take time to understand each child and be quick to give a hug, wipe a tear or sit and have a long chat encouraging the child to ventilate. Children must love to come home from school. We can never love too much. No matter what you have done to your family or accomplished in life, if you cannot look back on having given love, attention and comfort to your family, what have you really accomplished? Remember, the most blessed of women, Jael, was a homemaker! (Judg 5:24).
Young girls, you can bring comfort to your parents too instead of always longing to be at the receiving end.
