Possess The Gates !
Reading: Mt 16:13-20
“Our sister, May you increase to thousands upon thousands;
may your offspring possess the gates of their enemies” (Gen 24:60)
This promise was first given to Abraham on Mt. Moriah, where he went to sacrifice Isaac (Gen 22:17). Then it was given to Rebekah in Haran. Abraham was blessed with only one son of promise. For the above promise of production and possession he needed to find Isaac the right partner. And here she comes with the same prophetic pronouncement. From this union were born twins and through Jacob the twelve patriarchs. Today God’s children are thousands upon thousands because Rebekah’s offspring possessed the gates of their enemies.
When Sennacherib, king of Assyria, came against Jerusalem, Hezekiah gathered the people near the city gate and encouraged them saying, “Be strong and courageous ... with him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us and fight our battles” (2 Chr 32:6-8). The gates of hell could not prevail against the gates of Jerusalem. What strength these words give us, who are fighting to possess the gates of our enemies!
Mordecai sat at the king’s gate and refused to bow down to Haman. The devil could not prevail against Mordecai (Esth 6:13). The iron gate opened to release Peter (Acts 12:10). That’s all the strength of the enemy gate.
Jesus said, “I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Mt 16:18). It is a metaphor of offense, not defence. Each of us is building the church. The blessing pronounced on Rebekah holds good for us too. We must increase to thousands upon thousands.
Take courage and go where the Lord leads you. He, our Captain, goes before us. Never fear. Possess the gates of satan like Deborah. From Abraham to Christ it has been an onward victory march. There is no defeat for us.
Our God is a God who opens in a way that no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open (Rev 3:7). “See,” He says, “I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.”
Go and Possess! (Mic 2:13; Isa 45:2,3).
