My Egg is Flying !
Reading : Luke 2:41-52
“Jesus grew in wisdom and stature,
and in favour with God and man” (Lk 2:52)
A baby is like an egg, lying on a spot. It then begins to crawl and walk and run. It goes to friends and neighbours. A mother rejoices over these developments. But when the child becomes a teenager and starts flying beyond this “safe” territory into the unknown, the mother develops palpitation. This is what happened to Mary.
Jesus completed twelve and started thirteen when He went with His parents and siblings for the Passover festival in Jerusalem. Mary had given Him freedom to be with relatives and friends on their return journey (Lk 2:44). When He was missing, they searched for Him and found Him in the temple. This crisis happens in every home as teenagers grow wings and become more and more independent.
Jesus was breaking out of the chartered territory and Mary became “anxious.” Did someone kidnap Him? Was there an accident? When she saw Him, she said, “Son, why have you treated us like this?” When the learned Rabbis were amazed, Mary was upset, not the least impressed. The Bible says, “They did not understand what He was saying to them” (v50). This is the mistake mothers do. They don’t try to understand their teenagers. When others appreciate, mothers are always critical without any commendation or encouragement for them. Mary did one good thing. She kept these things in her heart. She tried to put together whatev er happened and understand her growing so n. S he understood that the time had come for her to cut the apron strings and let Him go, step by step. She did not go to her friends and neighbours complaining about His behaviour but “treasured” the incident in her heart. She saw the silver lining and kept her anxiety at bay.
If we had been in Mary’s place, we would have verbally and physically abused the child and dragged Him back home thus clipping His wings. But because of the gentle way the mother treated Him, He went back with them and was obedient to them. Jesus “grew.” Be patient. That’ll help your teenager blow off steam. Your teenager is growing, developing. They are in God’s hands. Don’t expect adult maturity. Keep praying.
Expect your terrible teens to turn out to be adorable adults
