Holy Man of GOD
Reading: 2 Kings 4:8-10
“God has not given us a spirit of fear,
but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Tim 1:7)
“I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God” (2 Ki 4:9). The well-to-do Shunammite first invited Elisha for a meal. Then it became a regular feature. Whenever Elisha passed by Shunem he started to stop there for a meal. This lady observed him carefully. Then she decided that Elisha was not the type of man who would take advantage of her. When she developed that confidence, she invited him to stay with them whenever he came by.
All men are not like Elisha. We read about the teachers of the law who devoured widows’ houses (Mk 12:40). Their religion was sham. They made every effort to show people that they were godly, wearing long robes and making lengthy prayers. “In the last days
... people will be ... unholy ... having a form of godliness ... who
worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth” (2 Tim 3:1-7). It is clear that these men and women were
‘religious people.’
See the danger for women, married, unmarried or widowed? When men visit you, carefully observe if they are ‘holy’ men. Don’t go by their ministerial popularity. It’s all a form of godliness. Don’t be naive. But observe their behaviour. If the way they look at you or behave to you has a sexual tinge go on red alert. Show him your displeasure. Don’t put him to shame immediately but behave in such a way that he will be ashamed of his behaviour. Never entertain such people in your house. If it is more than a look or touch you need to do something more. They are addicted to lust. May be you should inform your husband or a concerned person. If he is not dealt with, he will be damaging more lives and the Kingdom of God.
We must be especially careful about ministers of God who have free entry into homes, most trusted by people and the least suspected. It has to be understood that all these “holy” men dispensing divine bliss have human bodies and sexual cravings. We raise too ordinary mortals to the ranks of gods resulting in disappointment afterwards.
“Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things” (2 Tim 2:7).
