Lovely Lady!
Reading: 1 Timothy 2:9-10
“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Prov 31:30)
Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Abigail, Bathsheba, Tamar, Abishag, Esther, Jemimah, Kezia and Keren-Happuch were all lovely women. We know the temptations some of them faced because of their beauty. Bathsheba fell in sin or succumbed to temptation while Tamar was raped.
The Bible says that men will be tempted to lustfully fantasize when they see beautiful women (Prov 6:25). The danger then for the woman is to fall for his overtures (like Bathsheba) or be raped (like Tamar). That is why it is important for beautiful women not to flaunt their loveliness. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So every woman is attractive to someone. That’s why all women should take the precaution from danger. By flirting and coyness you are digging your own grave. Avoid seductive behaviour.
Avoid outlandish make-up. Your God-given beauty is enough. Be simple and modestly smart. Esther was self-controlled in her beauty aids. She did not pester for beauty lotions like some girls trouble their parents today (Esth 2:15). She won everyone’s heart by her simplicity. But you should be the best and the prettiest you can be. Shine in your studies. Let not your beauty be a distraction to your studies. A beautiful woman with an empty head is like a gold ring in a pig’s snout (Prov 11:22). Your beauty will shine like a gold ring but your lack of wisdom will make you a pig in the eyes of people. As you progress in life, you will lose the favour of people.
Dressing provocatively in outfits highlighting your contour violates the sanctity of your sexuality. The neck of your blouse must not be cut too low and your top must reach at least mid-thigh. Never become proud of your inner beauty which God can take away anytime (Isa 3:24). Most important than anything is to cultivate your inner beauty by developing a gentle and gracious spirit. It is of great worth in God’s sight. That’s how the old-time holy women were beautiful before God (1 Pet 3:3-5).
The first impression is the best impression, they say and a book is judged by its cover. So your dress speaks for yourself and reveals your inner person. So be careful, little girl, what you wear!
