“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it” (Gen 3:6). The first one in the whole universe to be deceived was a woman. That too, after clear in- struction, and she knew it by heart. This is what is described in 2
Timothy 3:6-7: “They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.”
It is one such evil desire that led to the deception of Eve. Note, in both instances it was cunning people. “Gullible” means easily deceived or duped. Why were these women duped? They were always learning but never took effort to understand the truth. This clearly shows that we need to go much deeper than learning. Unless we understand what we learn, we will be duped. We are surrounded by serpents. Unless we are on the red alert all the time we will be carried away by their craftiness.
No one can deny that we are living in the last days, and one of the signs of the last days is deception. “Many” will be deceived. Even the elect may be deceived. Be careful that you are not one among the many. How?
Take time to understand what you read from the Bible. Meditate on it. Allow the truth to sink deep inside you. Go down on your knees and let it transform you. “She who received seed on the good ground is she who hears the Word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty” (Mt 13:23). The fruits of your meditation must be seen in your life.
Use a good Study Bible regularly which will keep you on the right track. Being full of the Bible with clear understanding is the only way to keep you from deception. Beware of poisonous serpents that speak in the TV or pulpits or CDs or books. Do not run after signs and wonders. Even the devils can do these (Mt 24:24). Paul was afraid for the Corinthians that “just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ” (2 Cor 11:3). If people under Paul’s teaching could be deceived, where are we? Beware!
