This could be a vital truth to a woman. Many women become putty in people’s hands. They are footballed by husband, children, father, mother, in-law or others. Take the example of Michal. She had the freedom to fall in love with David to the extent it became the drip, drip, gossip of the palace. Then how did she not have the assertiveness to refuse another marriage? (2 Sam 25:44). After marrying Paltiel, she could have refused to come back to David. Why was she shuttled back and forth? She certainly had a backbone to say an emphatic, ‘No’ (2 Sam 3:13-16).
Women had no backbone those days or lacked the freedom. Probably they were oppressed and treated like property. Yet we read about Deborah who went to war, Jael who killed an army captain single-handedly, Zelophehad’s daughters who claimed their property, Miriam who led Israel, Sherah who built three cities, Ruth who made a bold choice, Sarah, who put her foot down in sending away Hagar, Jochebed who defied the king’s command to save her son and the midwives of Egypt, Rahab who chose to join her righteous enemy even though her nation was not for it, Abigail, who saved her family and the too-many-to-count women of the New Testament, all showed nerve (Judg 4; 5:24; Num 27; Mic 6:4; 1 Chr 7:24; Gen 21:10; Ex 1:17-20; 2:2-4; Josh 2; 1 Sam 25).
God was fair even in the Old Testament, allowing women to claim their rights, giving them the courage and anointing to accomplish a task and helped them overcome their feminine physical weakness. They enjoyed the freedom of choice to do good or bad. They were not created without bones. In fact the first woman was created out of a “bone” (Gen 2:21,22). Women were not dummies those days. If a woman was a dummy, it was her choice. They had strong will-power. Women should be bold and courageous to do the right thing. If they live close to God, He will help and guide them.
We should never throw the blame on anybody for any wrong we may do. We should not allow anyone to put pressure on us to go against our convictions or blackmail us. Say, ‘Yes’ when you have to say yes and, ‘No’ when you have to say no. Godly assertiveness is a jewel for a woman.
