Sometimes when I see women walk slowly to their jobs, I wish I enjoy that luxury. For me life is so many minutes. I count every minute. Time is precious.
The first Biblical character who comes to my mind is Rebekah. The Bible highlights her quickness. When Abraham’s servant requested some water, she “quickly” lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink (Gen 24:18). She “quickly” emptied her jar into the trough. She “ran” back to the well to draw more water (v20). The servant “watched her closely” (v21). The young woman “ran” and told her mother’s family (v28).
One thing that was striking to the servant was Rebekah’s swiftness. When he narrated what happened to Rebekah’s family, he mentioned, she “quickly” lowered her jar (v46).
Even though Isaac was a very rich man with many servants, Abraham’s servant was on the lookout for a brisk, hard-working girl for him. Abraham expected his ninety year old wife Sarah to be “quick” (Gen 18:6).
Abigail was another brisk person. Abigail acted “quickly” (1 Sam 25:18). When she saw David she “quickly” got off her donkey (v23). The Bible calls her an intelligent woman (v3). If she had not gone “quickly” to meet David, not one male, belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by daybreak (v34). She had trained herself to be “quick” (v42).
The women went out “quickly” from the tomb and “ran” to give the good news to the disciples (Mt 28:8). Imagine Jewish women in long robes running with the glad tidings!
Women must be calm, quiet and relaxed with the family and guests, never showing anxiety or hurry. But when it comes to work they must be fast, so that they will have enough time to relax.
Quick people accomplish more. They usually do not put on weight, and have a healthy heart. By nature you may be a slow person. But it is not impossible to train yourself to be quick. Have an agenda for the day. That will usually keep you on your toes, leaving you no time to be lazy. The quicker you are, the brighter will be the day because you’d have accomplished more that day, like the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31.
