For a month we struggle and then gradually they fade out of our memory. We want the old things to pass away but they cling to us like leeches. We try to shake them off but not in full throttle. Here are some tips to get the leeches off —
Without a deep heart desire to change, you are not going to make it. Instead of making some usual decisions, examine yourself and find out where you really want to change and put your finger there. It is not enough to note down your decision mentally or put it down in your diary. You must have an action plan. How are you going to do it?
Don’t be unrealistic, aiming for the skies. Your decision must be down to earth practical, something which you will be able to achieve. If it is a big goal like writing a book, instead of putting it down as, “I want to write this book this year,” mark it as, “I will write one chapter a week.” Or, “I will not get angry today,” instead of, “I will become more holy.” That is more realistic, pragmatic and achievable.
Plan escape routes. If you want to shed some kilos then avoid walking past the bakery. Avoid high risk situations like when you are planning to shed anger, avoid anger-kindling topics with your husband.
If you make too many resolutions at a time, in all probability, you will keep none. So make one or two resolutions and plan to master them. Live one day at a time instead of thinking about your year-plan.
Let not failure make you give up. We all fail. Get out of that all- or-nothing mentality. There are bound to be lapses and they must be looked upon as natural. Pick up yourself again and start the journey once again with double vigour. Drive away the demons of depression by rewarding yourself for each small victory.
We grow by making resolutions. Even though scripturally we are new creations, practically the old nature must be curtailed bit by bit and every day we must become newer and newer. So have a Happy New Year and let’s hope this year brings the best for all of us.
