As the modern generation gets more and more of mental exercise and less and less of physical, the tendency is for the mind to become wizardly and the body flabby. Exercise revs up the heart. A brisk walk in the morning or aerobics sends the blood racing through the vessels cleansing it of toxins. If you want to duck heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, arthritis and even some cancers, you better exercise and have your weight under check. If morning exercise tires you, push it to the evening. Evening five to seven is a good time for an hour walk when you can pray and praise God for many items that get crowded out of your morning prayer.
Exercise tones up our muscles and makes our body firm and makes us look younger. It burns up food and makes us eat more, which is one of the pleasures of every day (Eccl 2:24). An exercise program, for some funny reason, gives us a discipline that we didn’t have before. In the beginning we may find it difficult. But we’ll improve as days and months roll by and we will actually start enjoying it. If we consider the pay off, it’s worth it and it is wise not to gamble with our health. Deborah kept her body trim.
I have seen people suffering from arthritis of the knees, hip, back or shoulders, popping pills and yet complaining of pain. Many of these medicines cause gastritis and are expensive. There are ex erc ises for the above and also for various ailments. A physiotherapist can teach you. Make it a discipline to do the exercises you need. You’ll feel healthier and happier.
Walk to the bus stop or bicycle to work. Take pleasure in keeping your house trim, neat and beautiful. Sweeping, cooking and washing are all good exercises. If you have space, try gardening. I grew up climbing trees to take crow eggs and bicycled about 5 km a day till the age of 64.
Those whose work is sedentary, like computer work, should get up every hour to walk about five minutes. Though you may not feel the benefits immediately, in the longer run you will feel healthier and that health leads to happiness.
