Disobedient Husband
Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:10-14
“God has called us to live in peace” (1 Cor 7:15)
“Abigail was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband was surly and mean in his dealings” (1 Sam 25:3). It is unfortunate that many godly girls after marriage discover that their “believer” husbands are tyrants. Even though husband and wife are one flesh, when it comes to answering God they are two. One cannot and need not answer for the other. When the husband wants to follow his own way in spite of the wife’s pleas she has to release him into God’s hands. She has to let him have his way. She is not answerable to God for him. Then she need not cry or struggle. She can simply trust God and concentrate on being a good wife in every way according to 1 Pet 3.
God has not called a wife to be her husband’s mentor or spiritual leader. Her calling is to be a good wife however her husband may be. When you come to such a decision and release your difficult husband into the Lord’s hand, you’ll experience a release and a peace. You have now transferred the responsibility to God’s shoulder. God is definitely a better person to deal with your husband. He can lead him to repentance too which you cannot do.
Now it becomes possible for you to rejoice at his victories and truly appreciate him, instead of totally being immersed on his flawed side. When you drop your whip to the floor then the Lord will take it up. To be a good wife in spite of the husband’s character is the most daunting of the wife’s calling.
Abigail was one such sensible woman trapped in an unhappy marriage. There was nothing common between them. They were poles apart. She was doing whatever she could to buffer his unwise decisions. That is, she was trying to be a good wife in spite of a bad husband. That’s why she is called an intelligent woman.
I don’t know what the Proverbs 31 husband did at home. The wife slogged without complaining. But ultimately it was she who got the praises. Another girl who had to marry a pagan due to circumstances turned it to her advantage. It is none other than Esther who released her husband into God’s hand and witnessed miracles.
“A woman who fears the Lord shall be praised” (Prov 31:30).
