Leaky roof

Reading: Galatians 5:13-26

A quarrelsome wife is like the constant dripping of a leaky roof”

(Prov 19:13)

A leaky roof means danger to the house. Quarrels happen in every family but a prudent wife will improve over the years. “Houses and riches are an inheritance from the fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord” (Prov 19:14). That is why it follows verse 13.

Why do we quarrel? (1) We want to have our own way. Ego prevents a woman from following the husband’s way. Crush your ego and accept the other’s way. (2) We don’t listen. When our own thoughts are boiling within, we literally become deaf to what the man is saying. Calm down and try to see his point of view.

Since quarrel is unavoidable, learn how to quarrel —

(1) Obey. “He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favour from the Lord” (Prov 18:22). If you want to be a “good thing” then obey what your husband says; or in other words accept his decision and submit. (2) You can argue or put forth your point but don’t use bad words. Avoid saying things that hurt him which will be difficult to erase after the fight is over.

(3) Don’t become emotional and raise your voice, shout or go on arguing non-stop. Keep your cool. Then your husband will be in a better position to see your point of view. If you shout and cry then he also will become angry and nothing fruitful will come out of the argument. (4) Try to give up. Whether you like your husband’s decision or not, accept it happily and go along with him. This will patch up your relationship.

(5) Don’t carry over ill-feelings to the next day. Make up. Talk pleasantly and smile and may be go out. Don’t cancel your joint bedtime prayer because of your bad mood. Praying together will help heal wounds. (6) Apologise. Even though you may not be at fault, say sorry. Don’t let him go to the rooftop (Prov 21:9).

If it is not an on-the-spot fight, you pray and prepare yourself before raising an issue, so that you will be more in control of yourself. Tell your husband that you would like to discuss something and fix a quiet time, may be after the children are asleep.

Don’t get frightened by quarrels. If we play by the rule we will improve and become a friendly pair.
