Lying lips
Reading: Acts 5:1-10
“The Lord detests lying lips,
but He delights in people who are trustworthy” (Prov 12:22)
Lying is not taken seriously today. Some believe it is impossible to live without lying while others believe it is not a great crime. But the above text puts us unfavourably in God’s sight if we have the habit of lying. He delights in those who make an effort to speak the truth. Not only God, even others trust a person whom they know will speak the truth. You can lie by changing your voice, raising or lowering your tone, changing facial expression or outright lying. We are dishonest. It is not what we say, it is what the other person understands that matters. “Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle? ... He who speaks the truth in his heart” (Psa 15:1).
We lie to cheat others, to misguide them or out of fear. When the truth is found out, naturally the person will lose her trust on us. Instead if you honestly speak the truth, after the temporary repercussions, relationship will be built all the more strongly. If Sapphira had shyly said, “I am sorry, Mr. Peter, we sold the land for so much. Please forgive us,” Peter might have repriman-ded her; but atleast she would have lived and grown spiritually (Acts 5:1-10).
More than anything, your mind will be at peace if you speak the truth. You will be bold. The liar will live in fear, worrying when his lie will be discovered. “Blessed are those who do God’s command-ments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are ... whoever loves and practises a lie” (Rev 22:14,15).
The Apostle Paul writes, “Therefore, putting away lying, let each one of you speak truth with his neighbour, for we are members of one another” (Eph 4:25). Why does the verse start with “Therefore?” Come to the previous verse: “Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Eph 4:24). We are a new creation. All our old things must go away. In this new self we cannot speak lies.
Start training yourself from today onwards to put off lying and speak the truth whatever it might cost you. Do not fear the consequences. Be bold to speak the truth. You will see how God works on your side.
