Reading: Exodus 4:20-26
“A disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones”
(Prov 12:4)
Osteomyelitis or infection in the bone is painful and difficult to treat, sometimes requiring surgery. So is a wife who brings shame.
Esau married Judith and Basemath who were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah and therefore to Esau. Of them Rebekah said, “I am weary of my life because of these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land, from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living” (Gen 26:34,35; 27:46).
Mrs. Job was blessed with an excellent husband. She ought have been proud of him. Even though she was not a very good wife, he did not use it as an excuse to look for any other woman who pleased him better. He was absolutely faithful to her (Job 31:1-3, 9-12). Not because he was afraid of his wife, but because he feared God. Yet in his time of sickness, when she ought to have been a great support and comfort to him, he became loathsome to her (Job 19:17). Yet when he was healed, he chose to forgive her and built up his life once again with her.
We do not know what other problems Job had with his wife, but we can be certain, for a respectable public figure like him, she was not his crown, someone who brought honour to her husband. She wished he were dead (Job 2:9). His extreme integrity was irking to her and her language to her husband was obnoxious.
He who finds a wife must find a good thing (Prov 18:22). He should not contract osteomyelitis. A husband should be proud of his wife, not ashamed of her. Learn from the Bible about the many wives who brought credit to their husbands and emulate them. It is no easy job to be a wife but don’t get discouraged. Keep working on yourself. We are daughters of Sarah (1 Pet 3:6).
To pursue righteousness, we need to look to the rock from which we were cut and to the quarry from which we were hewn. Reflect on the characters of Abraham our father and Sarah who gave birth to us (Isa 51:1,2). We must bring healing to our husband’s bones.
