Why be a fool?
(Continuation) Reading: Ecclesiastes 9:13-10:3
“As dead flies give perfume a bad smell,
so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honour” (Eccl 10:1)
A woman may be a highly respectable person. But a little foolishness will mar her good name. So let’s put off foolishness.
10. It is not uncommon for us to get insulted. How do we react when that happens? Are we in the habit of giving tit for tat? Remember Jesus, how He was spit upon and mocked. Why can’t we follow His example? That will show our spiritual maturity (Prov 12:16). If we immediately pounce on the one who insulted us, we prove ourselves to be fools. Be like Mary who was calm when accused by Martha.
11. Anger is another dead fly that labels us as a fool. A patient woman is a wise woman (Prov 14:29). Anger leads to quarrel. How often we see women quarrelling over as trivial a matter as a pot of water! Give up like Abraham and pose for a wise woman (Prov 20:3). Anger is an automatic emotion. When it arises in our bosom we can either quell it or give vent to it like Euodia and Synteche. If we are habituated to outbursts of wrath, we are of all fools most miserable (Prov 29:11).
12. To answer before listening is folly and shame (Prov 18:13). You must let the other person speak like Manoah’s wife (Judg 13). Concentrate on what he is saying. Many conflicts can be resolved by listening. Don’t brush argument aside. Listen carefully, weigh it and grasp the truth in it. Then give a soft answer (Prov 29:20).
13. To err is human; but to repeat the error is foolish. As a dog returns to its vomit we should not repeat our folly again and again (Prov 26:11). No one is perfect. We all err. But once we make a foolish error we must repent of it, go to God in utter sincerity like Rahab, receive strength from Him to overcome it and the past should become history.
14. We must be women of vision. “The wise woman’s eyes are in her head, but the foolish woman walks in darkness” (Eccl 2:14). The wise woman has a goal and purpose in life like Priscilla and she knows where she is going. She works her goal and accomplishes her purpose. At her death bed she rejoices saying, “I have finished the race” (2 Tim 4:7). But the foolish woman wanders about in life aimlessly. She has wasted her God-given precious life.
Remove the dead flies from your life and be a pleasing aroma of Christ (2 Cor 2:15).
