Women not to teach?
Reading: Acts 18:24-28
“I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority
over a man; she must be quiet” (1 Tim 2:12)
There is a lot of confusion over whether women can teach or not. I want you to come with me through the Scriptures.
A young man laments how because he did not obey his teachers, his life was ruined (Prov 5:13). We cannot ignore the hundreds of thousands of women teachers who are teaching young people to save themselves from this untoward generation. Before being taken up, Jesus commanded His disciples to make disciples and teach them to obey everything He had commanded them (Mt 28:19,20). If someone tells me this was told only to the eleven disciples or only men can go and make disciples and teach people the Bible, I will only laugh at his ignorance.
When Jesus saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So He began teaching them many things (Mk 6:34). Any kindly woman who sees people straying from the truth and going to hell will be moved with compassion to teach them many things. Who can say no to it? Teachers teach their students everything like how to pray and how to read the Bible (Lk 11:1). Is it sin for a woman to do that?
We are to teach one another (Col 3:16). Do you think only men can teach one another? The Lord’s servant must be able to teach (2 Tim 2:24). There are so many women serving the Lord. They must be able to teach. All Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching. A woman well-versed in the Scriptures will use the Scriptures to teach. Older women with all their experiences in life should teach what is good, wrote Paul to Titus (Tit 2:3). There is no teacher better than experience. Why should experience go waste? The older a godly woman grows, the richer will be her knowledge. Women can be excellent teachers in Sunday Classes and youth meetings. Writing is another avenue through which they can teach. Dr. Billy Graham’s daughter, Anne Graham Lotz, is an excellent Bible teacher.
Any sensible woman will understand what Paul meant. If she thinks she must be quiet, it is the deception of the devil. Paul was not trying to suppress women. He was referring to authoritative teaching of doctrine in the church. Women should discern how they should be womanly in whatever they do. Nature itself will teach her. She must know when to teach and what to teach and when to be quiet. Women, wake up! speak up!
