Love Intoxication
Reading: Song of Solomon 5:10-16
“May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer — may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love” (Prov 5:18,19)
What is the message for the wife here? If a man has to be happy with his wife she has to be loving, graceful, giving herself totally to him in a way that he will be intoxicated with her love. I had a friend who told me that her husband wanted to commit sin with her every day. Women need to come out of this false notion.
See how an adulterous woman attracts a man (Prov 7:10-18). Women don’t get ready to meet their husbands when they come home. They don’t have a wash, dress up and put a string of jasmine on their hair. Most women never tell their husbands they were waiting for him eagerly. Bedroom is a mess with dirty clothes piled up and a crushed bed-cover. When her husband shows love, she is sleepy. Excuses like — children are awake, bed is creaky, I haven’t washed the dishes, etc, flow freely like the Shulamite (SS 5:3).
In the book of the Song of Solomon see how the woman pleases her beloved. The opening sentence is, “Let him kiss me ...” She gives herself freely to her husband. This is exactly what Paul recommends: “Since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife. The husband should fulfil his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other” (1 Cor 7:1-5). Impotence need not be a dampener to your love life.
Note, in the Song on Solomon how freely the man and the woman express their feelings for each other. Sex should not become a duty to the wife or a silent movie but something to enjoy, laugh and have fun. Not without reason God has kept this book in the centre of the Bible. A sexually fulfilled husband will be a happy man trying to please his wife. He will tend to ignore her shortcomings.
Never start sleeping separately. Do not become overspiritual. Enjoy outings with your husband. Appreciate him and try to understand his feelings and language. Learn to understand the hints he gives. Let him be the centre of your life, not your friends, not even yourself. Go for a honeymoon every wedding day, of course with your children and keep up the joy of marriage.
