Mother’s Teaching
Reading: Proverbs 31:1-9
“Listen, my daughter, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching” (Prov 1:8)
What a joy it is to be blessed with a little baby girl! Tomorrow she is going to be a mother like you. So start teaching her from as early as possible. Sing songs for her when she is a baby and keep her hugged as long as possible. A mother’s love is something that a child never forgets. She may throw a temper tantrum when she is one year old or even earlier. Ignore her tantrums. Let her learn that her trick is not going to achieve anything.
Teaching to accept ‘No’ is a valuable lesson that will help her all her life. By one year or so you can put the child in a baby chair and place the food before her. She will eat the required amount. Don’t force-feed her after that. Let the child grow up eating her food. Don’t worry about the mess you have to clean up. As the child grows up, gently make her to replace things, especially her toys (Prov 29:15). Children must be taught to do some household chores very early. They can wash their own plates, keep their shelves clean, sweep and help in the kitchen. Teenagers can do simple cooking. As little children go to school they would like to imitate their peers. They will demand money when they see other children spending or like to wear dresses like their friends. Make them understand that they cannot imitate their friends in everything. Teach them Biblical values. Don’t worry if they don’t take you seriously. Just keep praying.
Many mothers feel awkward to talk to their girls about puberty. They must know what to expect before attaining age. Once they come of age, explain to them the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system with pictures. It is safer for them to know how one becomes pregnant and the dangers of premarital sex. Share with them some daily news. Your own experiences may also be enlightening to the child. Such open talk will prevent them from believing their friends’ stories of where babies come from. The child will also know that they can trust their mother. Be gentle, loving and kind to children so that they will trust you with their secrets and have no fear to talk to you about the problems they face.
If you have taught your children the Bible from a very early age and prayed for them regularly, they will make you a proud mother like the mother of James and John (Prov 31:1).
