Delightful Daughter
Reading: Exodus 2:1-10
“Listen, my daughter, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching” (Prov 1:8)
Daughters sometimes think that their mothers are a pain in their neck. I was no exception. But now when I think of her, I feel I had not thanked her enough for all the beatings I received at her hands as a child, and all the gentle counsel that kept falling in my ears as I grew up.
This world is a cruel world, unsafe for girls. What can protect you from the dangers lurking at every corner? What can spare you the heartaches of life? Nothing but the instruction of your father and the teaching of your mother. Paul instructs children to obey their parents in the Lord (Eph 6:1). Your heart rebels. Parents’ counsel clashes with what your friends advise you (Prov 30:17).
Your parents have lived in this world atleast twenty years more than you. They have seen the ups and downs, the good and bad of life. “Mummy, you don’t know anything,” you say. They don’t know everything but they do know something about life, better than you.
If you are fond of jewels, remember this, there is no better ornament for your head or a chain for your neck than your parents’ teachings (Prov 1:9). Paul says obedience is the right thing to do. That’s the way you show your respect to your parents. It goes with a promise: “Life will go well for you and you will enjoy long life” (Eph 6:1-3).
All parents may not be gentle, kind and understanding, but still if you obey like Miriam, God will honour you for that. Only make sure that your obedience will please God — I mean, if your parents ask you to do something against God’s plain commandments or your conscience, you need to politely disobey.
Your parents may object to your friendship with boys for good reasons. You can easily lose your balance and fall in love with the wrong person and lose your sexual purity. Detachment after that is going to be most painful and not without physical, mental and emotional damages. Parents’ counsel is a rein for you. Marriage is not running and catching as you see in the TV. It is much more. For a happy long married life, go by the counsel of your parents, elders, Bible and prayer, and bring joy to your parents (Prov 10:1).
