“Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” Pointing to His disciples, He said, “Here are My mother and brothers.
For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother” (Mt 12:48-50)
Jesus had detached Himself from His physical family. Now, those who heard Him, believed Him and obeyed Him were His family. Was His physical family proud that a member of their family had become so famous? I don’t think so. He being the eldest son and probably without a father, may be they wanted to consult Him over some important decision. They had no time with Him. His family had to request Him time to talk to Him. He was no more for His family alone. He came out for Israel — soon He’d be for the whole world.
Because of the crowd, Jesus’ mother and brothers had to wait outside and send word. When someone announced their presence, Jesus did not immediately rush out. He kept His cool and continued to talk, giving the disciples the impression that they were indeed His family. He asked the one who had informed, who His family was. Then He pointed to His disciples and said that they were His family.
A woman in the crowd had said sometime, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you” (Lk 11:27). People would have got excited to see His mother and rushed out to exalt her. But Jesus immediately put down such a thought, saying, she was not any specially blessed person. Those who obeyed Him and did God’s will were His brothers and sister and mother, thus cutting His family down to mere mortals (v28). This discouraged the woman and others from rushing out to kiss her feet. If He had told the crowd: See, My mother has come, He would have put her on a pedestal and they would have done obeisance to her. He never shared His glory with another, not even with Mary who gave Him birth.
Jesus anticipated in the coming era that Mary would be lifted up to the position of a goddess. If you examine the Scriptures, in many places Jesus made it clear that she was just a human being, God’s chosen vessel like you and me.
You are His mother and sister, if you do His will!
