“Whom God has joined together, let no one separate” (Mt 19:6)
In Indian marriages, usually the girl is absorbed into the boy’s family. For all the members in the family the boy is ‘their’ boy and the girl is an outsider. Sometimes what happens is that the mother-in-law or father-in-law or brother or sister or sister-in-law of the house insinuate themselves between the husband and wife. It starts as an innocent complaint against the newcomer. The boy often falls for it and chides his wife, siding with his family. Thus a rift begins to form. It is hard for the new couple to identify this rift as a dangerous sign and thus nothing is done about it. Gradually the rift widens. The complaints increase and the boy also may start confiding in them about his wife and the wife becomes the victim. Rarely it could be the other way about also as in the case of Samson’s wife who allowed her countrymen in between them and their marriage ultimately broke.
Whatever be the problem between husband and wife, they must be left to themselves to sort it out. If both come together seeking help, help may be offered. But the boy’s relatives should never wedge themselves between husband and wife. The husband should not go with his complaints about his wife to his family members. Countless marriages have been destroyed by the families of either the boy or the girl.
“A gossip separates close friends” (Prov 16:28). Thus unnecessary confiding to close relatives is a bomb that could kill a marriage. Husband and wife should guard their marriage carefully. Your mother or father, brother or sister, brother-in-law or sister-in-law should never be entertained to come between the both of you. You are one flesh. Stick together. Leave no room between both of you for a third person.
It is hard exercise because as a marriage progresses, lot of bitterness and hurts creep in. That should not discourage you from sticking together and encourage you to seek solace from your own family. Such distraction will not allow your marriage to mature and fruition. So fight the hard battle and never allow the one-body which you are, to be cut asunder.
