Titbits on Habits

Reading: John 21:4-12

She arose and served them” (Mt 8:14)

What makes a woman a lady? It is first, her appearance. Learn to stand straight without hunch and wear a smile on your face. Be smartly dressed all the time, even at home, without smelling of sweat.

Etiquette speaks volumes about you. Politeness in behaviour and voice earn you marks from the observer, whereas rude behaviour and shouting minus. When you are talking to someone concentrate on what they are saying with expressions on your face. If you are sitting, sit with your knees together.

When someone visits you, appropriately welcome them and serve them a glass of water immediately. Serve on a tray. If you serve tea, see that it is not dripping over the sides of the cup and on to the tray. Avoid any criticism but be generous with compliments. Be polite even if you have to say, ‘No.’

Do not bite your nails or scratch your head or yawn in public. Hold a handkerchief to your mouth if you have to cough or sneeze or blow your nose. Picking your nose is an awful sight. Take care of your oral hygiene so that your bad breath is not repulsive.

I am surprised at the number of women whose hair abound with lice. To make it more surprising, they are school and college girls, teachers, office staff and missionaries. Scratching your head is an unseemly sight. Not only you are spoiling your health and manners, you are giving it to others too. There are various medications over the counter for this infestation.

Punctuality is the most loveable of all qualities because it saves the other’s time. People may not tell you to your face but they will be cursing you under their breath if you are not there on time putting everybody to trouble.

Let’s come back to where we started — Peter’s mother-in-law waiting on the Lord. Adorable women are hospitable. Welcome your guests with warmth and generosity. A hot coffee or tea or a chill drink is more than good manners. It warms the heart. Dear woman, become a lady!

Good manners will open doors that the best education cannot!”
