“Those who work their land will have abundant food” (Prov 12:11)
“Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite. ‘Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?’ they asked. ‘Hasn’t He also spoken through us?’ And the Lord heard this” (Num 12:1,2). It is possible that a woman is jealous of her shining brother or prosperous neighbour or a bright student or a well-favoured colleague or even her own blessed husband. When she feels the sting she may react in various ways. A competitive student destroying the record notebook of the excellent student or mudslinging or character assasination of an enviable colleague is not unknown to us. One can go to the extent of murdering the other also.
Cain was very angry with his brother Abel, because God respected Abel and his offering but did not respect Cain and his offering. Looking at the long face of Cain, God gave a wonderful piece of advice: “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door, it desires to have you, but you must rule over it” (Gen 4:2-8). If he had taken God’s advice to heart, he would have fared well. He failed to rule over the sin crouching at his door, fell prey to it and murdered his brother.
Miriam was challenging the leadership of Moses. God heard it and punished her. She had a taste of leprosy (Num 12:1-16). She had a premature death and could not enter Canaan (Num 20:1). She is quoted as a warning for us: “Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam on the way when you came out of Egypt” (Dt 24:9). She was in the leadership circle, the highest a woman could hope for (Micah 6:4). What a sad end of a leader!
If she had followed God’s advice to Cain and concentrated on developing her musical talent and prophetic gift, her record would have been flawless. But she fell in the trap of comparison and jealousy and failed to rule over the sin of slander.
Each of us is an unique creation of God. We must be our own self. We must channelise our energy in doing what is right instead of trying to be somebody else. Then we will receive our rewards in the Day of His Coming.
