“Why is this happening to me?” (Gen 25:22)
That was the lament of Rebekah. Some time or other in life, every woman asks this question. Why is she surrounded by suitors when I have no takers? Why does she shine in her studies when I scrape through? Why is she prospering when I am dwindling? Why are her children bright when mine are average? Why this cancer? Why this situation? Why, why, why? Well, first of all we must understand that we can’t find the answer to all our questions. Naomi’s future seemed bleak. Esther thought she had only 50/50 chances when she said, “If I perish, I perish.”
Let’s turn to the Scriptures and encourage ourselves. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts,” says God (Isa 55:8). Our thoughts are usually negative. We fear the worst. Naomi said, “The Lord has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me” (Ruth 1:21). She could not see God’s thoughts. Her future was cloudy and dark. But in heaven she’d be laughing now at her own doubts and fears.
Psalm 107:23-32 is my favourite portion which I often read. Please read it and encourage yourself. How often we are at wits end but soon find ourselves at our desired haven. It is rightly said: “I don’t know my future, but I know who holds my future. I don’t know where I am going but I know who is leading.” When your eyes are set on the Great God, your anxieties will vanish. Whenever my heart trembles I tell myself that my God is Almighty, “All Mighty.” Then my heart quietens down. The greater you see God as, the greater will be your faith. If He is not doing what I want, that means He has chosen not to for good reasons. The problem that cannot be solved must be managed.
That does not mean we should be sitting on our hands. Naomi was depressed but not inactive. Her brain was ticking constantly to find a solution to the situation. She planned and acted and the Lord blessed her initiative. Consult appropriate people if need be. Pray and do whatever possible within your means to tide over the situation and then rest in God for the final outcome.
Trust in the Lord and don’t despair, He is a Friend so true.
No matter what your troubles are, Jesus will see you through.
Sing when the day is bright, sing through the darkest night.
Every day, all the way, let us sing, sing, sing!
