The preventable tragedy

Reading: 1 Corinthians 13

The two will become one flesh.

So they are no longer two, but one flesh” (Mt 19:5,6)

A woman throws up her arms are screams, “I want a D” (as if divorce is an obnoxious word). Why? What happened? “He doesn’t talk and I am going mad.” Now observe, he is a quiet type of personality but she is a talker. It is their basic nature and neither can be changed drastically. Is he a bad man? No. Does he love you? Yes. Oh my! Do not conduct a funeral for your marriage when your love is still alive. Abigail stayed put against all odds.

You must look at your husband as a whole. He has so many positive things about him. Always add a positive appendix when you talk negatively about him, like: “He doesn’t talk much, but he treats me decently.” “He doesn’t take me out but he doesn’t drink.” Often when the whole world appreciates a man, he still falls short of his family’s standard.

Marriage is I, you and we. I cannot be selfish, I cannot expect him to be like me; but together we can withstand the storms of life and remain best friends till the last. You have a share in every relationship problem you face and you must try your best to change yourself instead of crying, “Why is he like that? Why can’t he change?” Attempting to change him is futile and frustrating.

There are no winners when a marriage begins to unravel. So cling to one another. Don’t flee from conflicts like a coward. Stay on and put up a brave fight to save your marriage. What is this fight? When misunderstanding creeps up, overcome the tendency to go into a silent mode. Neither burst out into a quarrel. Pray, quiten your heart, plan your words and gently open up at the right time. Learn to bring out your feelings into the open and discuss them. Refrain from harsh words. This way, you learn to understand each other better, to hurt each other less, and seek forgiveness quickly.

Divorce does not occur on a single day. It is a process that starts with criticism and goes on till one day the fuse is lit. So check it at the earliest before you end up rowing the boat of your life all alone on the rough seas of the world.

For better, for worse, stick together till death parts you.
