“My maids and I will fast” (Esth 4:16)
Days are changing. Those days it was slaves; then it became servants; now it is helpers. People demand self-respect and rightly so. We need to recognize our helpers as equals with dignity. They are here, not to serve us but to help us. Esther shows us the way. Though queen, she was able to kneel down together with her maids. That’s the relationship she had with her maids. Naaman’s little maid could boldly talk to her mistress.
God cares for servants. The Sabbath rest was for servants too (Dt 5:14). Servants were to be set free on the seventh year (Ex 21:2). Servants were to be included in times of celebration and festivals that they may also rejoice with their masters’ household (Dt 12:12).
We are admonished to reward our helpers for the help they extend to us. Be fair in paying their salary (Col 4:1). Bless them when you are blessed. In a way we are also servants to a Master on high. We are especially admonished not to threaten our helpers (Eph 6:8,9). We need lot of wisdom to deal with helpers. We must keep them at the level of helpers lest they take advantage, and at the same time be fair and loving to them (Prov 29:21). When they are overworked, like when we have guests, pay them extra. When you make a special dish, make a little extra, so that they who helped you prepare may also taste it.
What do you do when they are sick? It is natural to feel distraught because we will be over-burdened with the extra work. But this is the time to show your concern like the centurion did. He prayed for him and nursed him thro’ his sickness (Mt 8:5-13).
Most helpers are poor, in debts, with a drunkard husband and little mouths to feed. Your concern must be to lead them to Christ. By your love reveal Christ to them. Teach your children to talk to them respectfully. Try to visit their home and develop a rapport with the family so that gradually they will be won over to Christ. A faithful helper is a boon. So, if you are blessed with a good helper, be extra kind so that they will stick on to you.
Helpers deserve, at the least, to be treated with dignity and courtesy.
