Empty Cradle
Reading: Luke 1:5-25
“Sing, O barren, you who have not borne! Break forth into singing,
and cry aloud, you who have not laboured with child!”
(Isa 54:1)
Do your eyes fill whenever you see a mother hugging a baby, because you are childless? Wipe your tears. God knows what you are going through. No doubt every guest asks, “How many children?” Leaving you with a choked throat. But you too can have a cradle in your home — with a baby in it.
Sarah (Gen 11:30), Rebekah (Gen 25:21), Rachel (Gen 29:31), Manoah’s wife (Judg 13), Hannah (1 Sam 1) and Elizabeth (Lk 1:7) experienced a miracle touch from the Lord for their empty cradle. Can we claim the Old Testament promise that there shall be no barren among you? (Dt 7:14). Of course, all God’s promises may be claimed. But one must remember that most Old Testament promises were physical whereas the New Testament promises are spiritual. We can definitely pray for a miracle. But if the miracle does not happen, we must pray for a greater miracle — adoption.
Adoption is in no way inferior to having your own child. As much as there are parents longing for children, there are children longing for parents. Start applying at the earliest. The ideal is to wait for just about three years and then go for adoption. If you are past thirty, then wait for no more than two years. Age matters. You must adopt when you are young and energetic, fit enough to run after the child.
After adoption you may conceive and have your own child. Consider it a bonus. Treat both the children as your own. If you do not conceive, then go in for another adoption within two years, so that the child will grow up with a sibling. Consider it a ministry. See how God blessed Mordecai for adopting orphan Esther. Even if you have two children of your own you may adopt a child to give them a home and a life.
The father heart of God yearns for the fatherless and destitutes (Dt 10:18; 24:19,21; Job 31:17; Psa 10:14). But how can He help them without your help? Pure religion according to Apostle James is helping orphans (1:27). It is a triple benefit scheme — you help yourself, and an orphan and God! So go for it today!
