Why marry, Why worry?

Reading: 1 Corinthians 7

“I would like you to be free from concern ... An unmarried

woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs;

her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit.

But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world —

how she can please her husband” (1 Cor 7:32,34)

All said and done, the aim of every Indian woman is to get married. But times are changing. Those days girls considered marriage as a necessary evil. These days they tend to think that it is an unnecessary evil. Marriage is not necessarily an attractive prospect to an educated woman, especially one of the growing number. Marriage no longer provides women with security, either emotional or financial. The men they entrusted with their happiness gave them nothing but pain.

But we need to consider the other side of the coin too. A woman needs a man’s leadership. A man complements a woman. Where she lacks he fills up especially in matters of guidance. He prevents her from making major mistakes in life. Life may be a bed of thorns but if the woman takes each thorn as a valuable spiritual lesson she will benefit herself and others with the insight she gets from her experience. Problems are pedagogues.

If you wait on the Lord and marry the right person, you won’t wish you hadn’t married. You’ll go ahead tackling the problems and maturing as a Christian. “Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterwards,” said Mr. Benjamin Franklin. That’s it. A man’s contradictory characters are to be dichotomized and dealt with — Encourage and appreciate his good. Deal with the bad. The love and affection of husband and children mellow down a woman. Family people live longer, says a theory. They have something to fall back on during times of trouble and old age

If God leads you very specifically to lead a single life, you may. But you don’t need to go about telling people that. Later on, at any age, if you feel like getting married, if you meet the right person, you may, without feeling guilty.

Girls get scared when they hear the stories of their married friends. Certainly marriage is not for cowards. Gird up your loins and put on your bridal dress over that and enter marriage. You will come out as a gold-winner!
