Fulltime dangers!

Reading: 1 Samuel 12:3-5

“If you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall”

(1 Cor 10:12)

As the revival catches up, more and more women are opting for fulltime ministry or wives of ministers. It is good to be forewarned of the dangers of fulltime ministry and be forearmed —

• The first is probably covetousness. People are blessed through us and money starts flowing in. The temptation of unaccountability follows. Elisha refused gifts and Jesus threw back satan. Let money be handled by someone else. Let your mind be on ministry, not in raising money. The lifestyle of ministers gradually changes as ministry picks up. Their old house is demolished and a mansion comes up. Luxury cars and helpers buzz around. Maintain a simple lifestyle. Be approachable to people. Remember the life of Jesus and the early missionaries who came to evangelize India.
• Do not neglect your children. Give them quality time and a good quantity of it.
• You will be thrown together with many men and the danger of adultery lurks at every corner. Guard yourself. Don’t believe the lies of the devil that come in the form of well-garbed excuses and spiritually-sounding statements. The devil is clever in blunting your conscience. Paul says, “I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man” (Acts 24:16). Once you neglect the voice of your conscience in small matters, the next to follow will be bigger matters till you slide into the black hole of backsliding. Then you deceive yourself into thinking that you are right.
• Once God starts using you, your status and style go up. Pride follows unless you are extremely cautious. It prevents you from asking forgiveness, listening to counsel or even smiling at common folk. One condition for the Israelite king was to not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites (Dt 17:20).
• Last but not the least is the time you spend with the Lord. As ministry grows don’t allow your personal and family time to dwindle by increasing commitments. Be wise to say, ‘No,’ without guilt. Learn delegation. Let your first love be burning always. The secret of your successful ministry is your secret time with God. If you are careless here, you will become a dry brook. “I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first” (Rev 2:4).
