Is your mouth smelling?
Reading: Matthew 5:21-24
“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth” (Eph 4:29)
I still remember my mother bringing live coals, threatening to burn our lips with it when we spoke bad words. Psychologists may call it abuse but certainly it kept us from pronouncing bad words. It is shocking that we get to hear bad words, banned in our homes, openly spoken in the TV and families sitting and laughing at them. Children learn lot of bad words from school and get desensitized to it. It becomes part of their vocabulary. Some words like ‘stupid’ are not categorized under bad words. If they are not bad words, what are they?
Jesus said, “Anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca’, is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell” (Mt 5:22). ‘Raca’ is a term of contempt in the Aramaic language which is equivalent to “rascal.” Do you see the seriousness of speaking bad words? Train your children to use clean language from a very young age. They pick up the language spoken at home. So let your home language be decent.
“Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be” (Js 3:10). James further compares it to fresh water and salt water. In the Church we are angels but in the kitchen we become devils. No, sisters, this should change. Be angels in the kitchen. Be angels in any situation. Even if you hear some vulgar jokes, never repeat them. When your children speak bad words explain to them and tell them never to repeat the word.
“You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourself of all such things as these ... filthy language from your lips” (Col 3:7,8). May be your friends speak profanity and you are tempted to think it is okay. It is not okay. Your conscience will point its finger at the word. It is possible to get your point across without using foul language.
“Then I saw three evil spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth ...” (Rev 16:13). Every foul word you speak is a frog from your mouth. Let pearls drop out of your mouth whenever you speak. May people love to hear you speak. Every language has good, loveley, beautiful words. Use them generously.
Eschew friends who speak bad language. Each time you feel a pang of guilt, go to God in confession and decide to speak clean. Pray for lips anointed with grace (Psa 45:2).
