Respect everyone!

Reading: 1 Kings 21:5-15

“Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers,

fear God, honour the emperor” (1 Pet 2:17)

This very day the Persian and Median women of the nobility, who have heard about Queen Vashti’s conduct, will respond to all the King’s nobles in the same way. There will be no end of disrespect and discord” (Esth 1:18). Queen Vashti was obviously an arrogant woman. But most of us who are spiritually-minded also tend to disrespect others at times. One reason for Vashti’s disrespect could be pride, and people sensed the danger of her attitude infecting others. Spiritual pride could be one reason why we disrespect others and we teach unconsciously the same to our children and others.

The Bible teaches us to respect our parents (Lev 19:3), elderly (Lev 19:32), superiors (Eph 6:5), spiritual leaders (1 Thess 5:12), husbands (Eph 5:33), wives (1 Pet 3:7), poor (Js 2:3), everyone (Rom 13:7), and even those who argue with us (1 Pet 3:15). We must show respect to everyone. Even children must be respected.

This dimension is fading away gradually these days. Employees are not taught to respect customers who enter the shop. Students have scant respect for their teachers. Unfortunately we too get caught up in the web at times and tend to look down on people.

We can show our disrespect in various ways. Showing bad face, wounding words, body language, not listening, ignoring, shouting, beating, sarcasm, derogatory addressing, spitting and so many other ways. We can decide to stop all these and learn respectful ways.

Whoever it may be, we must learn polite ways to receive them and talk to them with a smile. Even if we have to say a firm ‘No,’ we can do it respectfully. The Indian way of ‘Namaste’ with a bow is gradually disappearing from our culture. Our children are learning western ways of saying ‘hi.’ It is okay, but other styles of putting feet up in the presence of elders (leave alone rising up and putting off the TV) must be strongly discouraged.

The one who respects will be respected. It is the humble who respect everyone. So let us first of all learn to shed our pride and learn to stoop low. “Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor” (Prov 29:23).
