Leech's Daughters
Reading: Isaiah 58:7-12
“The leech has two daughters, ‘Give! Give!’ they cry” (Prov 30:15)
The Bible has ample warning for avaricious women. Parents dread Christmastime because it is difficult to satisfy their daughters. They want the latest dresses and footwear even though they may have a dozen at home. Many women are fond of expensive silks and fashionable jewelry. They keep adding to their wardrobe and jewel box. The Bible says, “She who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives” (1 Tim 5:6).
The reason why there is so much poverty in the world is because there are so many rich in the world. The more we spend on ourselves, the less we can spare for the poor. Our home can be comfortable but not luxurious. We can dress well but not with elaborate jewelry and expensive clothing.
When you go shopping make a list of items you need. Check again to see if there are things you can do without — an expensive perfume or a luxury item. Ask yourself, “Do I want it or do I need it? Can I manage without it?” Cut off items which you really don’t need. Never go on a shopping spree and buy impulsively what you see and what you never planned to buy. Don’t let your house be cluttered. Give away things you don’t use. At the end of the month if there is some money left over, let it go to the poor or missions. Try to increase the left over money by cutting down on your expenses. It will become a habit and you’ll have a burgeoning purse in heaven.
“Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown You and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God,” prayed Agur (Prov 30:8,9). We all pray for blessings and blessings. Solomon concluded that the leech’s children were daughters because they cried, “Give, give!” What a shame!
There is another point here. It is the latest trend to overwork for a fat salary and thus sacrifice the time for God and family. John Baptist teaches us to be content with our salary (Lk 3:14). Don’t earn by wrong means but pay your taxes. He also teaches us to give away our excess to those who do not have.
“Godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Tim 6:6).
