“Teachers of good things — that they admonish the younger women”
(Tit 2:3,4)
Too many women are floundering in this world like rudderless ships, looking for someone to show them the way. Jesus said, “Knock and it shall be opened to you.” Too many lives are destroyed because we have failed to knock at their hearts. Too many eyes fill up when we touch the nerve. Mentoring is what is lacking today. Outwardly young women may look joyful and bubbly but it could be a false facade.
If you are on the lookout for aching hearts, it will not be difficult to recognize one. You may notice words like, “Who cares for me?” or “What life is this?” or other words of frustration. You may notice someone’s eye suddenly filling up. Knock at that heart by putting your hand over her shoulder and the door is sure to open. Be a good listener except for a word or two to encourage the person to pour out. Avoid probing into details.
Don’t try to tell her everything all at once. Help her find the first step towards peace. Let her develop confidence in you.
Ruth found a mentor in Naomi because of the loving way she was treated. Naomi was selfless and cared for Ruth’s future which Ruth was able to understand unmistakably. That’s when she went by Naomi’s counsel. But for Naomi she might have wandered through life as a young widow. It need not be a big number. It could be just one or two. It could even be your daughter or granddaughter who needs help. Every loving word, every bit of care you show, is a knock on their heart. Sooner or later it will open if you show genuine care. Jesus mentored His disciples. He loved them, cared for them, spent time with them, taught them to pray, chided them, protected them and guided them in every way, so much so, they became strong pillars of the Church and turned the world upside down.
You may be planting a tiny seed in the little heart. It is sure to grow into a banyan tree some day. Young girls especially will not openly appreciate your guidance but will keep absorbing counsel. My mother’s counsel were bitter to me. I thought she did not understand me. But her words struck cords in my heart. Today I value her mentoring more than ever. The world is full of heavy hearts and full eyes. Find the one closest to you and knock at her heart.
