Reading: Luke 15:11-24
“How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction!
I would not obey my teachers or turn my ear to my instructors. And I was soon in serious trouble in the assembly of God’s people”
(Prov 5:12-14)
“ ‘My father,’ She replied, ‘you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as you promised, now that the Lord has avenged you of your enemies’ ” (Judges 11:36). In his misguided zeal, Jephthah wanted to sacrifice his daughter to the Lord. The innocent young girl, with limited Biblical knowledge totally submitted herself to the wishes of her father. Of Jesus it is said, “He went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them ... And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, andin favour with God and man” (Lk 2:51,52). The reason for the four-dimensional growth of Jesus was His obedience to His parents.
Jesus was only twelve years old when He wanted to do God’s work. He did not walk away from His parents because God was directing Him. There was a lot to learn and that’s why God gave Him parents.
How do you become wise by obedience? Your parents’ reproofs transmit wisdom to you if you are willing to listen to them. “Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold is a wise rebuke to an obedient ear” (Prov 25:12; Lk 1:17; Prov 1:8,9). You may find it hard to digest but if you accept rebuke and change yourself, a miracle happens — you become wiser. Your parents nag you to eat vegetables and fruits and home food, right? But you’d rather go out with your friends and have pizza, KFC Chicken and pepsi. Occasionally it is okay — Otherwise you’ll gather unhealthy kilos that lead to health problems. Jesus grew in stature by the healthy food cooked by His mother. The most important blessing in life is God’s favour. Ephesians 6:1 and 2 say, “Children obey your parents in the Lord for this is right. ‘Honour your father and mother’ — which is the first commandment with a promise — ‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’” Unless it violates the Scriptural teaching, implicit obedience will bring God’s blessings on you. In this world we need the favour of men. That is why parents teach you social niceties, to be polite to people, to say thank you and sorry. People keep away from children whose social behaviour is improper. Medicine is bitter but it heals you. So is obedience!
