Diamond Heart
Reading: Hebrews 5:7-10
“A sword will pierce your own soul too” (Lk 2:35b)
It is generally said that women are born to suffer. How happily Mary sang, “From now on all generations will call me blessed” (Lk 1:48b). But what a heavy price she had to pay for it! The virgin birth brought with it the clucking of tongues. May be Joseph died early, leaving her to care for the big family. Her beloved Son Jesus never exalted her as the mother of God’s Son. She had to see her Son suffer on the cross and die. Not a very covetable life. Women need to make their nerves as steel and heart as diamond. God puts them through the grind so they may become useful vessels.
A young girl faces trials from all sides. From within her arise doubts, confusions and complexes. Her parents may fail to understand her and may even ill-treat her. A girl marries with rosy dreams only to find that life is a bed of thorns. Childbirth brings with it not just joys but plenty of sorrows. She may face problems from her husband, in-laws, grown-up children along with her own ailments. Later on she may be plagued with property problem, widowhood or deadly diseases.
Whatever it may be, it is good to remember, that you are never alone in it. The Lord has said that He will never leave us nor forsake us. It is repeated five times in the Bible —
The first reference is regarding enemies. God wants us to be strong and courageous. We should not be afraid or terrified because the Lord goes before us (Dt 31:6). When the enemy comes in like a flood, He will lift up the victory banner.
The second reference concerns our responsibilities. Whether it be office or family or ministry, be assured that He will never leave you nor forsake you till you complete your job (Dt 31:8).
The third is regarding leadership. When leadership is thrust on a woman she often feels inadequate and inferior. Here again God’s presence is a sure promise (Josh 1:5).
The fourth is found in Solomon’s prayer. It was a thanksgiving prayer for the fulfilment of all God’s good promises. Let the prayer, “May He never leave us nor forsake us,” be on our lips (1 Ki 8:57).
The last is in the context of money, to be free from the love of money and be content with what we have, because God has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear” (Heb 13:5,6). May this promise give you a heart of diamond that can withstand any blow.
