My sun never sets!
Reading: Joshua 23:1-3; 24:14,15
“The path of the righteous is like the morning sun,
shining ever brighter till the full light of day” (Prov 4:18)
Old age may be accepted as a fading flower or welcomed as a ripening fruit depending upon your attitude. If you are walking with God you just shine brighter and brighter like the noon day sun and then enter eternal glory. Your sun never sets. The older you become the sweeter you are.
Physical Health: Have regular check-ups. Take your medicines regularly. Many have died before their time by their carelessness. Eat healthy food and keep your weight under check. Accept diseases with equanimity and never give up the battle till the end. Diabetes and arthritis are not death sentences. “Listen to your body,” is a good dictum to follow where it concerns physical exercise and rest.
Mental Health: Check if you have forgiven every one. Keep your mind alert. Reading, checking bills, writing diary, learning new things like computer, new language or painting, doing puzzles, memorizing Scriptures, etc. delay brain degeneration. Be as active as you can, doing whatever you can instead of idling. Take part in family functions braving the journey. Interacting with grand-children helps in longevity, a study says.
Emotional Health: Do not allow worries to dampen your spirit. It is time for you to detach yourself from unnecessary burdens that weigh on your mind — like the unsaved son or daughter, properties, enemies, wayward grandchildren, etc. Do things that give you joy like going for a holiday. Go out and make friends.
Spiritual Health: Go to the church as long as possible. The Bible is full of vitamins and tonics for the old. Let it be your constant companion. There is no age when you cannot pray. You can pray till your last breath. Have a good spiritual friend or friends with whom you can meet as often as possible. Speak about the Lord to anyone possible, like the old widow, Anna.
Pooh, pooh the idea of retirement. If you are a teacher, continue to teach someone, A doctor? Give free prescription to anyone. A nurse? Continue your nursing care. The world is full of opportunities to those who seek them out. Then your sun will never set!
