Blackmailing
Reading: Judges 16:4-17
“Surely you need guidance to wage war,
and victory is won through many advisers” (Prov 24:6)
“Then she said to him, ‘How can you say, I love you, when you won’t confide in me? This is the third time you have made a fool of me and haven’t told me the secret of your great strength.’ With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was sick to death of it” (Judg 16:15,16). Delilah was emotionally blackmailing Samson demanding: If you love me do this. Women often become victims of blackmail too. Young girls must be careful in their movement with boys. They can have your letters or photos taken with them and blackmail you demanding sex or money. If you are caught in such a trap never give in to their demands. Boldly confide in your parents or elders who will work out a solution for you.
Parents may also face blackmail by children in various forms. “If you don’t buy me a mobilephone, I will commit suicide or run away from home.” Don’t take such threats lightly. Meet with a counselor and get the issue sorted out.
Parents can also blackmail their sons and daughters stating, “If you don’t sever your relationship with this person, we will not give you your share of our property.”
A wife and children may face blackmail in very many ways. “If you want to be treated decently at home then you treat my lady love respectfully,” may put them between the devil and the deep sea.
We know we cannot give in to ungodly demands. But does the woman have the spiritual stamina to refuse to become putty in somebody’s hands is the question. When Samson succumbed to Delilah’s blackmail, disaster struck (Judg 16:15,16). In most cases, if the woman is not able to tackle the situation she will need the help of a counselor or elders. Going for counseling is no more a taboo. Be bold. Do not allow yourself to be blackmailed. Seek help. Consider the following Bible text: “Plans are established by seeking advice; so if you wage war, obtain guidance” (Prov 20:18).
All women are not blessed with spiritual acumen to handle situations beyond their mettle. One should never consider it beneath her dignity to consult someone. Neither should she let fear paralyze her. Be bold to seek help and enjoy divine peace.
