Say, Cheese!

Reading: Romans 15:13;14:17;  Nehemiah 8:10

“A happy heart makes the face cheerful” (Prov 15:13)

Why smile only at the mirror? It is a treasure you can give to anyone at no cost. It is soundless music. I can never forget what a tribal woman said when I smiled at her: “When you smiled at me moro hridayo phutigola”  (my heart blossomed). What do we infer from that statement? People are smile-starved. They want somebody to smile at them. However now a days you can’t even buy it for money. Why?

People are too busy to smile. Parents are trying to finish their work and forget to smile at their children. The shy smile of the lovely bride disappears after marriage. Children are not relaxed around parents and find it difficult to smile. May be their homework burden prevents it. Let us put an end to this fast pace. We must relax, slow down and smile like Leah (Gen 30:13).

We are too worried to smile. One of the main teachings of Jesus is not to worry. Paul taught us not to be anxious for anything (Phil 4:6). Be lighthearted. Lay aside your worries and smile. Smile at your family, smile at your neighbour and smile at your enemy. Let your smile be genuine. We don’t lose anything by giving a smile, rather we get lots in return — love, friendship and a light spirit. A woman should now and then wash her face, comb her hair, powder her face and wear a smile. That makes her a lady.

This world is a sad world. It is our duty to brighten up faces with our smile. Let not your smile be small and fearful. Say cheese! Anybody will relax at that. “All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continual feast” (Prov 15:15). People are oppressed with their work and feel wretched. It is the one whose heart has a feast who can help them relax with their smile. This world is in need of our smile. Practise it all the time, whatever you may feel inside.

“A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones” (Prov 17:22). A smile heals wounds, soothes the soul, comforts the spirit and lifts up a tired body. Its healing effect cannot be hidden. It is the medicine for this sick world. Even believers are in dire need of this medicine. Give it liberally, generously, without hesitation, without request and you have healed the one you gifted your smile to. Smile, please! Say, cheese!
